• Born 1965 in Ulm/Donau, Germany. Medical school at the universities of Giessen and Freiburg. Medical training and residency at the university hospitals of Lübeck, Barcelona and Aachen.
• “Feodor Lynen” fellowship of the foundation Alexander von Humboldt from 1995 until1998 on neurophysiological studies and neurophysiologically guided deep brain surgery for movement disorders like Parkinson’s disease
• Since 2001 in Mallorca. Married and 1 child.
• Languages: German, English, Spanish and Catalan, fluent spoken and written (reports). French spoken.
• Cooperation with Clinica Picasso
• Consultant neurologist in the Clínica Juaneda (in front of the Picasso Clinic).

Neurology

Neurology is a medical specialty dealing with the diagnosis and treatment disorders of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), and the peripheral nerves in the body. It deals also with the blood vessels of the brain, and all effector tissue, such as muscle.

A broad range of complaints and diseases can be diagnosed and treated: headache, dizziness, nerve inflammation, “lumbago”, unclear pain syndromes, stroke and cerebral haemorrhage, memory disorder, tremor, gait and movement disorders, Parkinson’s disease, numbness, muscle atrophy etc. Often there are some complementary studies necessary. These studies can be carried out in the Clínica Juaneda or in the Clinica Picasso, almost vis à vis. These studies can usually be charged directly, which facilitates eventuallly dealing with insurance companies.

Since the 1.1.2011 the ambulatory consultations are taking place in my new and wheelchair-ready office, which is located close to the Clínica Picasso and just in front of the main building of the Clinica Juaneda, directly beside the car park.

Range of competence

• Neurological Examination. Cranial nerve status, strength, motor performance, sensitivity, coordination, muscle tone, gait, balance.
• Memory test – Examination of memory, neuropsychological studies i.e. for speech disorders, cognitive impairment, after head injury.
• Electricophysiological studies require a purposeful approach e.g. during nerve or muscle inflammation, epilepsy etc. Electroencephalogram (EEG), Electromyography (EMG), Electroneurography, Evoked Potentials and Polysomnography (sleep laboratory) can be accomplished by my collaborators in the Clínica Juaneda - just beside our office.
• Chronic neurological disorders like e.g. Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer disease, chronic pain syndromes, epilepsy require integral treatment and detailed consultation, which considers the situation of the family and their surrounding field.
• Headache and Migraine require usually a very detailed patient history, experience, purposeful diagnostics and patience; they are, however, usually well treatable.
• Ambulatory infusion treatment in case of acute Migraine crisis, MS-relapse, pain therapy.
• Acute hospital treatment in case of stroke, MS-relapse, brain tumour, vertebral disc hernia or other acute neurological disorders takes place in the Clinica Juaneda close to our practice. Clinical visits take place daily including weekend. The hospital has an excellent translation service with native english speakers for the patients daily from 9.00 to 21.00h and/or. 9.00 to 16,00 at weekend and holidays.
• Lumbar puncture e.g. to rule out meningitis, neuroborreliosis or multiple sclerosis, in the Clínica Juaneda.
• Deep brain stimulation (DBS) and intrathecal therapy – Indication and implant surgery, control and adjustment of cerebral pace makers - deep brain stimulation - for Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders
• Psychiatry – Psychopathological examination and treatment. Many neurological syndromes are related to affective disorders which deserve specific treatment.
• Image studies – X-Ray, Computerised Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging studies can be performed in the Clínica Juaneda, we arrange appointments and charges. In a 1,5 Tesla apparatus all standard techniques are available. Furthermore in specific situations, diffusion and perfusion sequences, 3-D angiography, cerebro-spinal flow studies, spectroscopy and reconstruction of the vestibulo-cochlear system. The imaging studies are interpreted by the neuroradiologist Dr. Taboada and fully explained to the patient.
• Sonographic Doppler and Duplex studies of the cervical arteries can be performed either by the cardiologist Dr. Chadid or by me colleagues in the Clínica Juaneda.
• Home visits are possible in case of urgency or immobile patients.

Special Consultation Vertigo, Dizziness and Gaze Disorders with Prof. Dr. med. Detlef Kömpf

(www.professor-koempf.de/) Professor Kömpf was until april 2010 chairman of the Neurological Department of the University of Lübeck and is Co-Editor of multiple german and international neurological journals. Moreover is the current general secretary of the European Federation of Neurological Societies. He is author of the standard monography “Neuroopthalmology” and numerous scientific articles. For years he is dedicated scientifically and practically to the vertigo syndrome and has built up a special outpatient service for vertigo patients. He lives partially in Mallorca and comes periodically to my office for a special consultation on vertigo, dizziness and gaze disorders.
